Feather River College Rodeo team wins region for 7th consecutive year

The Feather River College rodeo team won the West Coast Region on April 27 at the final rodeo of its regular season in Las Vegas.

The team's hard work paid off this season with eight members set to go to the national competition June 9 in Casper, Wyo.

The men's team finished first with an accumulated total of 7,084.5 points for the season. The University of Nevada at Las Vegas came in second. more than 500 points behind FRC. Feather River's women's team finishing fourth in the region.

In addition to its big win, seven members of the men's team and one from the women's team qualified to advance to the national championship. To advance, the team members had to place in the top three for the season in any given event.

Chant DeForest placed third in the All Around category. DeForest also took first in Tie Down Roping. DeForest was the only FRC member to take the gold in any category. The number of second and third places was high, however.

Lucas White took second in Saddle Bronc Riding while Dylan Vick-Hice took second in Bull Riding. Grant Denny placed second in Bareback Riding with Blaine Davies close behind for third.

Josh Garner placed second in Steer Wrestling and Brandon Mackenzie took third in Tie Down Roping.

Hanna Hundsdorfer placed second in Breakaway Roping; the only placement for the women's team.

"We have a team that's really strong," said Feather River's head rodeo coach Jesse Segura. After winning the West Coast Region, FRC is now ranked fourth in the nation. The possibility of winning the national college rodeo championship is very real.

"There'll be a lot of really good teams there," commented Segura. "We are in the mix, though. It's just one rodeo, so it'll ultimately depend on how we perform there."

In addition to winning the rodeo and the region, Segura was named as the coach of the year for the West Coast Region. All rodeo team members from the entire region voted and recognized the strength of the program that was built here in Plumas County.
