Legendary Legend Caps Comeback with Walk-off Single
QUINCY--Legend Lancaster capped an improbable ninth inning rally with a two-run single to lead Feather River to a 6-5 comeback win over Monterey Peninsula on Friday afternoon at the Eagles Nest.
Down 5-4 with two outs and the bases loaded, Lancaster drilled a 3-1 pitch to the outfield to chase home two runs and send all the Golden Eagles into shallow right field in a dogpile celebration. That sets up a series with American River, who defeated the Lobos earlier in the day. That series begins at noon on Saturday with a doubleheader, and moves into Sunday at 11 am if the games are split.
Just 20 minutes earlier, all signs pointed towards the Golden Eagles having to battle back the hard way with a loss in the double-elimination tournament. FRC trailed 5-1 heading into the bottom of the ninth. The Golden Eagles pushed one run across after Jake Dahl doubled and later came home on Isaiah Mezger's ground ball. With a runner on, Jackson Phillips launched a two-run homer into a breeze over the rightfield fence to pull the home team to within a run at 5-4.
A hit batter and two walks loaded the bases for Lancaster, who worked the count to 3-1 before slashing the base hit that would chase home Bryce Sargent and Walker DesRosier with the tying and winning runs.
Lancaster had two hits in the game and Dahl had three. Jack Hanna started the game on the hill for the Golden Eagles, pitching 6.2 innings and allowing three runs. Carter Lindyn pitched the final two innings and gave up just one run to get the win, his first of the year.
FRC improved to 30-11 with the win. American River comes into Saturday's contest at 19-22, but took two of three contests against Feather River earlier this season.
