Golden Eagles Win in Two Very Different Ways
EUREKA--Feather River won two Golden Valley Conference baseball games today in two very different ways.
The Golden Eagles took a pair from the College of the Redwoods on Friday afternoon in Eurukea, 18-0 and 7-5. The twinbill sweep pushed FRC's record to 12-6 overall and they are 4-0 in GVC play. They have now won eight straight games.
Feather River scored nine runs in their first at-bats during a 18-0 rout, but had to hang on tight in the nightcap after building a 7-0 lead only to see the Corsairs roar back to within two runs before falling, 7-5.
In the first game, the Golden Eagles took care of business before Redwoods even came to bat. The visitors sent 14 batters to the plate and scored nine times on nine hits. They would add runs in all but two innings of the seven-inning contest before finishing with 18 runs on 18 hits, with no errors.
Meanwhile, FRC pitching was spot on as well. Marcus Maeder went six innings and allowed just one single. He walked two and struck out eight. Kyle Scott finished the game, allowing one hit and he fanned two.
Of Feather River's 18 hits, 17 were singles. Jackson Phillips provided the extra base hit, a home run, to go with two other base knocks and he drove home five. Nick Anderson had four hits and three RBI, Kory Chu had three and Walker DesRosier had two. Overall, nine different players had hits.
In the second game, FRC built a 7-0 lead with two runs in the first, one in the fourth and sixth, and three more in the seventh. But the game completely changed in the bottom of the seventh.
The Corsairs chased five runs across the plate, much of it helped by Feather River miscues. The Golden Eagles uncharacteristically committed five errors in the inning and had just one hit. A 7-0 game quickly went to 7-5 heading into the last two frames.
But the Dirty Bird defense shored up, and Carl Colavecchio came out the bullpen to shut the door, pitching 2.2 innings and alllowed only one hit, fanning four. He earned the save, and Jack Hanna got the win with 6.1 strong innings before his defense caved. Hanna gave up only two hits, both in the third inning. He sandwiched those two hits with three strikeouts to get out of the inning unblemished. He gave up five walks, no earned runs and struck out seven.
Bryce Sargent led the offense with a two-run triple and three RBI total. Legend Lancaster went 2-for-5 with a double.
College of the Redwoods is now 2-15 overall and 0-4 in the GVC. The two teams will a single game tomorrow at noon.
