Feather River Wins Fourth Straight, Top Bulldogs, 8-7
SAN MATEO--Besides collecting a victory on Saturday afternoon over the College of San Mateo, 8-7, the Feather River Golden Eagles had a couple of other reasons to celebrate.
The win today was FRC's fourth straight, moving their overall record to 8-6 on the young 2026 season. It also gave them a measure of revenge for one of their losses this year, a 3-2 setback to the Bulldogs on Feb. 6.
Now, on a mini roll, they can prep for the start of the Golden Valley Conference season, which begins next weekend against rival Butte College.
"It was a good road trip for us before we dive into conference play," said FRC head coach Terry Baumgartner. "We hit the ball and had some solid moments pitching as well."
Today, the Dirty Birds scored in each of the first five innings and added two more in the seventh to build a 8-4 lead. They then held on as the Bulldogs roared back with three in the seventh to make it a one-run game. Kani Thomas then pitched the final two shutout innings to secure the win (and the save for him).
Feather River had 10 different players lodge base hits, including two each by Nick Anderson and Jackson Hertel. Both had doubles, and Jackson Phillips had a two-run home run in the third inning, while Danny Hurlbert's RBI-double gave his team the lead for good in the top of the fifth.
Carl Colavecchio pitched 3.1 strong innings in the middle of the contest to earn the win. He gave up one run, three hits, walked one and struck out four. Thomas' final line was two innings pitched, two hits, no runs, and no walks.
It was just the third loss this season for San Mateo, who is now 8-3.
The Feather River-Butte series begins on Friday (Feb. 20) at Butte with a 2 pm start time. The two teams then head to Quincy for a Saturday doubleheader that begins at noon.
