Feather River Moves Past Mendicino, 5-3
UKIAH--Visiting Feather River overcame a 3-0 first inning deficit, rallying back for a 5-3 victory over Mendocino College on Thursday afternoon in Ukiah.
Feather River improved to 5-6 with the victory while Mendocino fell to 4-4. The two squads will play again on Friday in a twinbill that is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
The Golden Eagles spotted the Eagles three runs in the first inning, as the home team managed to have five of the first six batters reach base. Four hits and three runs later, Mendocino held the early advantage.
But Feather River quickly responded in the top of the second. FRC used five hits to chase four runners across the plate, using a two-run double off the bat of Jackson Phillips and RBI-singles from Christian Obos, Walker DesRosier and Josh Davies.
The Golden Eagles would never trail again, partially because starting pitcher Jack Hanna settled in big time. After getting roughed up in the first inning, Hanna locked in and gave up just one hit over the next 5.1 innings. He retired the final 12 batters he faced before departing with one out in the seventh inning.
Ryan Pineo took over from there, throwing the final 2.2 innings without allowing a run, just three hits and no walks. It was the first win of the year for Hanna (1-1) and the first collegiate save for the freshman Pineo.
Feather River added an insurance run in the sixth when Obos drove home a run. Obos was 3-for-3 on the day with a double and two RBI. Phillips was 2-for-4, with both hits being two-baggers and Legend Lancaster had two of FRC's 10 hits and he scored twice.
After the Eagles and Golden Eagles play two on Friday, FRC will take on San Mateo on Saturday before returning home.
