Cougars Double Up Golden Eagles
TAFT-- Two evenly matched teams tooks turns rallying from behind but it was host Taft who came out on top twice during a doubleheader at Cougar Field on Saturday afternoon.
Taft edged Feather River 7-4 and 11-10 to sweep the doubleheader and win the three-game series after the Golden Eagles took the season opener on Friday. Taft climbed back from a 4-2 deficit in the opener while FRC rallied back from a 11-3 margin before they ran out of daylight in the one-run loss.
Feather River will wrap up this season opening road trip on Sunday with a single game at Merced.
In the first game, FRC scored all of their runs in the nine-inning contest in the third inning--all with no outs. Christian Obos had an RBI-single and Walker DesRosier had a two-run base knock before the Cougars could get an out.
But that would be the height of the offense in that game for the Golden Eagles, and the home team finally got to starter Jack Hanna in the fifth inning, eventually scoring five runs with the big blow coming via a grand slam by Edel Guemarez after Hanna had left. Hanna left the game having tossed 5.2 innings, giving up five hits, four earned runs, one walk and he struck out five.
Nick Anderson led the offense by going 4-for-5, while Noah Carrington and DesRosier had two hits each.
In the second game, Taft jumped out early with a monster six runs in the first, two more in the second and three in the third to take a seemingly game-ending 11-3 lead.
But the Golden Eagles wouldn't die, coming back with four runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth. Jackson Hertel had a two-run single in the fifth and Jackson Phillips blasted a three-run homer in the sixth, FRC's first round-tripper of the season.
The luck and daylight would eventually run out with one out in the top of the seventh inning when the game was called because of darkness.
Hertel, Jake Dahl and DesRosier had two hits each, as did Isaiah Mezger. DesRosier drove in five runs on the day.
Start time is slated for noon on Sunday for the Golden Eagles at Merced.
