Golden Eagles Host Skyline and Sac City in Super Regional
QUINCY--Postseason hopes and dreams continue for three CCCAA NorCal teams this week at the Eagles Nest in Quincy.
Feather River will host Skyline and Sacramento City in a double-elimination Super Regional, beginning on Thursday. Skyline and Sacramento City will square off at 11 am, while Feather River awaits the loser of that contest at 3:30 pm. The Golden Eagles will then play at 11 am or 1 pm on Friday, depending on Thursday's outcome.
The Golden Eagles need to survive the three-team scrum to advance to the NorCal Regional Championship, a three-game series that FRC would host if they win on May 17-19.
But first things first, hosting a Super Regional is special and certainly doesn't happen every year. FRC last hosted in 2022, and before that they welcomed playoff visitors in 2015, 2012 and 2009.
Skyline comes to Quincy with a 29-12 record, having swept Ohlone in last week's regional action. They were co-champions in the Coast-North Conference with Chabot. Sacramento City finished fifth in the Big 8 Conference and advanced to the Super Regional by beating Modesto in two of three contests last week. They are 24-17 on the season.
FRC is now 34-8.
"We have two of the best teams left in NorCal coming to Quincy this weekend," said Golden Eagle head coach Terry Baumgartner. "Skyline came here in 2022 for the Super Regional and they have another good club this year. They have great numbers offensively and they can really pitch.
"Sac City is a perennial powerhouse year in and year out and they have another good club this year, that is loaded with all kinds of talent on both sides of the ball. Both of these clubs are very well coached and they play the game the right way. It should be a fun tournament for the fans to watch."
Feather River is coming off a stressful weekend where they took two of three from Monterey Peninsula to advance. The Golden Eagles rallied to beat the Lobos in the first game 8-6, dropped the second game 9-5, and then rolled in the rubber match, 15-5.
"Our guys did a great job bouncing back after that loss last weekend," Baumgartner added. "They regrouped and put together a great effort in the biggest game of the year. Our players have done a great job all year long of playing well on the biggest stage, we just find a way to get it done.
"Both of these teams are probably more talented than us on paper, but our guys just find a way to play the game well and give themselves a chance every game. It also helps when you can get a good pitching performance out of your starter in that situation and Kyle Giovannoni gave us a good start. And really Eric Valdez gave us a good start as well in the first game on Friday but we just couldn't make enough plays for him."
Admission to the Eagles Nest will be $12 for adults and $8 for students and children per day. Live stream will be available on Feather River College Baseball's Facebook page.
